Data management is a challenge in biological research that uses microscopes due to the large volumes of data generated by advanced imaging techniques. As experiments produce larger and more complex datasets, researchers face growing difficulties in securely storing, organising, and analysing data efficiently.
We are in the process of establishing a formal data management policy in the Microscopy Bioscience Platform as well as establishing long-term strategies to support this within the School of the Biological Sciences. Some general guidelines are highlighted below:
- Data should not be stored on microscopes, this should be transferred to the user’s dedicated storage as soon as possible and it is the responsibility of the user to do so.
- Microscope computer hard-drives will be cleared when necessary, users will be notified of this prior to the event and given opportunities to transfer data.
- Temporary scratch data storage is available on the 300 TB storage system in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, Anatomy building. Please contact caic@bio.cam.ac.uk for information about this.
University information services provide storage for research data through the Research File Share (RFS) and the Research Data Storage (RDS).
