Experience Postgrad Life Sciences 2023 internship students

We are delighted to welcome the 15 students in the 2023 Experience Postgrad Life Sciences widening participation internship programme at Cambridge. This group of undergraduate students was selected from over 200 applicants from almost 50 different universities and will be in Cambridge from 10th July to 1st September.

They will be working in research labs across the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Clinical Medicine. The programme is run in partnership with Corpus Christi College, who are generously providing accommodation in College, as well as hosting a range of extra-curricular activities and support through postgraduate mentors.

Over the course of the 8-week stay, the students will gain valuable lab-based research experience and receive comprehensive training, from data analysis and visualisation, to science communication and postgraduate applications, developing a wide range of skills that will support future career directions. Each student will be paired with a dedicated mentor from among current PhD students and research staff to offer support and also to extend professional networking opportunities. Additional training sessions will support the students to prepare competitive postgraduate applications and explore the diverse career opportunities that a science degree can enable.

Following a warm welcome from the academic programme leads Janet Deane, Andrew Blagborough, Janet Kumita and Betty Chung, everyone enjoyed lunch in the Whale Café before a fabulous, guided tour of the Museum of Zoology led by Jack Ashby, Assistant Director of the Museum. The group very much enjoyed looking at museum exhibits differently, considering their histories and how ideas have been challenged over time.

Janet Kumita, MRC Career Development Award Fellow and one of Coordinators of the Programme said, “It’s clear that this year’s cohort is full of excitement and enthusiasm, it is going to be a great summer!”.

On the final day of the programme, the interns will present their scientific work at the Student Symposium and attend a formal dinner at Corpus Christi college.
