Senior Building Services Technician

An opportunity has arisen for a versatile Senior Building Services Technician to join our building maintenance/facilities team, providing an efficient and reliable service to our purpose-built research laboratories located in central Cambridge.

The role holder will assist in the preventative maintenance/repair of our highly serviced research building and will perform routine checks and monitoring of plant equipment. The role holder will support the Building Services Manager with planned and reactive maintenance for all plant within our highly serviced research building to ensure the provision of a safe, legal and compliant working environment that meets good practice standards at all times. This will include the maintenance or monitoring of heating, plumbing, and ventilation systems, general building infrastructure repairs, assisting with the installation of new often specialist research equipment, electrical testing and fault-finding of laboratory equipment. As a result of the above, the role holder will ideally have a diverse understanding and skills in plumbing, heating and ventilation.

The successful applicant will have:

A professional qualification in a relevant mechanical trade (i.e. NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds) however consideration will be given to applicants with a background in building services who are able to demonstrate technical competencies or practical experience of building maintenance services (or similar discipline).

Experience in providing building services support within a laboratory environment would be an advantage.

A flexible approach to their workload to balance the needs of research and work efficiently within a team environment.

Knowledge of the appropriate regulations to comply with relevant Health & Safety legislation.

Good communication skills (verbal and written), with good organisational skills and ability to work flexibly to meet changing demands and problem solve where necessary.

Once trained to a suitable level, the role holder will be required to take part in our out-of-hours response rota for plant failure, fire and equipment alarms.

Research Associate in MRI Physics for Neuroscience (Fixed Term)

Exciting opportunity for a Research Associate in MRI Physics for Neuroscience to join Professor Zoe Kourtzi 's Neuroscience team (Adaptive Brain Lab: https://www.abg.psychol.cam.ac.uk) and MR Physics teams at :

Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, Cambridge (Prof Guy Williams), Translational Neuroimaging laboratory, Cambridge (Dr Stephen Sawiak) Purdue MRI Facility, School of Health Sciences, Purdue University (Prof Uzay Emir).

Project Focus: The successful applicant will develop and implement innovative ultra high-field MRI and MRS sequences, protocols, and data analysis pipelines to address cutting edge neuroscience questions. They will join a research-focused multi-disciplinary team of MRI physicists and neuroscientists using neuroimaging in both human and animal models for discovery and translational neuroscience.

The research activity is at the core of a Wellcome Trust funded Collaborative award that brings together a cross-disciplinary team of international experts to build cutting edge MRI tools for investigating brain network dynamics for adaptive behaviour. Our work programme bridges work across species (mice, humans) and scales (local circuits, global networks) to uncover the network and neurochemical mechanisms that support learning and brain plasticity.

Development Opportunities: Our collaborative research programme provides unique opportunities for cross-disciplinary training in innovative methodologies at the interface of MRI Physics, animal and human neuroimaging, neurotechnology and computational science. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and retreats across the network as well as exchange visits across labs to facilitate cross-disciplinary training and collaborative working.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or have submitted by the time of appointment) together with a strong academic track record, in MRI Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or another relevant area that provides a solid grounding in MR physics.

A strong academic track record quantitative and programming skills are essential.

Experience with developing and implementing MRI protocols for biomedical , neuroscience research.

Experience with pulse sequence coding and MRI data analysis.

The successful applicant should demonstrate enthusiasm for generating new knowledge, openness to learning new approaches, and ability to contribute to a multidisciplinary team.

University Assistant/Associate Professor in Plant Ecology and Evolution

Applications are invited for an Assistant/Associate Professor post in Plant Sciences, available from 1 July 2024. We are looking to appoint at either Grade 9 (£45, 585- £57,696) or Grade 10 (£61,198 - £64,914) depending on skills and experience.

We welcome excellent candidates who can teach and perform research in Plant Ecology. In particular, we are interested in applications from those with a focus on fieldwork in areas such as molecular ecology, evolutionary ecology, microbial ecology in the context of plant biology, plant and microbial responses to climate change and other anthropogenetic stressors.

The appointee will join the Department of Plant Sciences, which delivers teaching and research that stretches across the plant sciences discipline - from ecology and conservation, to physiology, genetics and genomics. There will be the opportunity to be affiliated with the Cambridge Conservation Research Institute, a world-leading centre for research and training in biodiversity conservation, working in partnership with eleven international conservation organisations.

Key responsibilities include teaching undergraduates, conducting world-leading research, and advising postgraduate students and post-doctoral workers. There is the opportunity to become a Fellow of a College. Undergraduate teaching includes lectures in ecology, evolution, and microbial ecology, practical classes and small-group supervisions. The teaching commitment also includes an annual field course (locations include England, Portugal, and Borneo). Postgraduate training options include contribution to MPhil and PhD programmes. Innovations in teaching methods are actively encouraged, as are engagement with mentoring and professional development.

We will support the successful candidate to develop a research programme that complements and reinforces existing Departmental research strengths. There are shared laboratory facilities for a variety of environmental analyses both within the Department and in collaboration with other Departments.

Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant field and sufficient breadth and/or depth of specialist knowledge in their chosen discipline to be able to teach to a high standard. They should also have evidence of excellence in research and demonstrated capacity to develop research objectives, projects and proposals. Appointments at the level of Associate Professor will usually be able to provide evidence of success in obtaining research funding to support research or career development.

Research Assistant (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position in the group of Dr Madelaine Bartlett at the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to support the university's reputation for excellence, join a newly-formed research team from its inception under the direction of an established PI of international reputation and work in a cutting-edge research institute.

Under the direct supervision of Dr Bartlett, the successful candidate will work independently on a research project focused on studying the genes that control the development and evolution of sex determination in grasses.

Additionally, the role holder will play a key role in establishing and supporting a new research group to ensure its smooth operation. Responsibilities include procuring and maintaining resources, implementing standard operating procedures, and establishing a brachypodium transformation program.

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in biological sciences. Practical experience of working in a plant sciences basic research environment is essential, as is experience of overseeing laboratory operations. Proficiency in Brachypodium transformation and genome editing techniques is required, alongside familiarity with the complete life cycle of maize. Experience in pest control is desirable, as is experience in teaching and mentoring students. Familiarity with advanced microscopy platforms (SEM, confocal) is also desirable.

The successful applicant will have strong organisational skills, alongside excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. They will be able to work unsupervised and as part of a team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, with good IT skills and a high degree of precision and accuracy. Knowledge of relevant regulation and practice is desirable. The successful candidate will also be able to design and execute research projects, contribute to writing research papers and prepare and present research findings.

Join our team as a Computational Research Associate!

The McGovern lab is seeking a talented and motivated Computational Research Associate to join their research group. Our research aims to understand the role of mononuclear phagocytes in autoimmunity and placental development.

This is a grade G7 Research Associate post, dependant on previous skills and experience.

The McGovern Lab:

Our team focuses on characterising human mononuclear phagocytes, crucial immune cells distributed across all tissues in the body. These cells perform vital functions in tissue development and function, fighting infection and resolving inflammation. We utilise a range of technologies to develop our understanding of the ontogeny and function of these cells including proteomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic approaches. We utilise cells isolated from primary human tissue samples and organoid systems. As part of our team, you will contribute to groundbreaking research in understanding the properties of mononuclear phagocytes in both health and disease.

About the role:

You will develop your own projects and support other projects in the lab. This will involve analysis of single cell and spatial transcriptomic data sets generated from human tissues to understand immune cells and their cross-talk with stromal cells in health and disease. You will be working with cell biologists across a range of expertise including immunology, virology, microbiology, and clinicians to adapt, improve, and integrate existing software, to best answer the scientific questions of the research programme. You will also be encouraged to develop novel computational tools to support this.

Your tasks:

  • Design, implementation and application of single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analysis workflows

  • Statistical analysis and data visualization

  • Interaction and collaboration with researchers within the McGovern team

  • Consultation regarding the planning and design of sequencing experiments

Research Laboratory Technician (Fixed Term)

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative colleague to join our friendly team studying fundamental questions in neuroscience, by investigating neurotransmitter receptors in the model organism C. elegans.

You will join the group of Dr Iris Hardege (https://www.hardege-lab.com/) in the Department of Zoology. We are studying the roles of novel neurotransmitter receptors in the biology of the nematode C. elegans. The group primarily uses analysis of C. elegans as well as molecular biology, genetics and electrophysiology using Xenopus oocytes. We are an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming group, all members are encouraged to participate actively in scientific discussion as well as outreach activities.

You will be contributing to the smooth running of Dr Iris Hardege's group by providing technical support for research and by assisting with experiments.

You will be responsible for the operational running of the laboratory, for example, by managing C. elegans strains, ensuring maintenance of lab equipment, overseeing laboratory health and safety and procurement of equipment and consumables. Responsibilities will also include assisting with experimental work, for example, generating plasmids and C. elegans strains, carrying out C. elegans behavioural experiments and automated Xenopus oocyte electrophysiology recordings.

The successful candidate should have: - Practical experience of laboratory research (preferably with molecular biology techniques such as PCR and cloning). - Educated to BSc level in a STEM subject (or equivalent practical experience). - Strong organisational and communication skills. - Attention to detail and good record keeping. - Ability to manage multiple tasks and work within a set budget. - The ability to work independently and as part of a group. - A genuine interest in supporting scientific research. - An open minded, positive, and collaborative mindset.

Teaching Associate: Social Psychology (Fixed Term)

We are seeking an enthusiastic person to join the Department of Psychology as a Teaching Associate. It is essential that the post-holder has a background in Social Psychology. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to teaching and will ideally have experience of teaching at university level. It is essential that the post-holder is self-motivated, can work independently as well as part of a team, and has good organisational and communication skills.

The position is funded for 1 year. Ideally, the successful candidate will be able to take up the post of Teaching Associate on 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The interview date is projected to be the week beginning 3rd June 2024 , and will involve a short skills-based test.

Senior Clinical Training Scholar (SCTS) in Small Animal Cardiology

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: £27,820.00

The Scholarship is for one year in the first instance, renewable for periods of one year up to a total of three years.

The Scholarship provides an outstanding opportunity to receive specialist training in all aspects of small animal cardiology and is available to start from December 2024.

You will receive core training in all aspects of clinical cardiology, including interventional procedures and transoesophageal echocardiography. You will also be required to undertake and publish a research project. The training programme is approved by the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM-CA).

The Scholar will be required to register for the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. The training programme requires participation in the Department's clinical service, including the out-of-hours rota and first opinion practice, in addition to small-group teaching of veterinary students.

You must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or hold a veterinary degree qualifying you for membership. Membership will be required prior to commencing the Scholarship. Completion of an appropriate internship or a minimum of two years' experience in small animal practice is essential.

Finance Administrator (Part Time)

The Department of Pathology is seeking a highly motivated and professional individual to undertake financial duties, providing proactive support to academic and research staff.
We are a department that truly values teamwork and has strong and inclusive programme of wellbeing.

Candidates will ideally be educated to AAT level four (or equivalent level of practical experience). You will be highly numerate, analytical and proficient in standard software packages, particularly Excel. You will be well-organised and able to prioritise effectively and work to tight deadlines. The role requires a good understanding of finance and strong problem solving skills. Excellent communication skills are also essential, including the ability to explain financial regulations and procedures effectively to non-finance staff. You will need to have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as a member of a team and to build positive working relationships with a wide variety of colleagues. Previous experience of working in an accounts environment within a University would be an advantage.

Working closely with the Department's Finance Coordinator this role has a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Acting as a Departmental key contact working proactively with academics, researchers, and departmental budget holders as well as other University departments and external suppliers/customers to resolve queries

  • Carry out the Department's month end and year end procedures

  • Ensuring accuracy of financial information on University financial system (CUFS), identifying and resolving any problems

  • Working with the Shared Financial Services team to ensure that accounts payable and receivable transactions are accurate and timely

  • Carry out accounts administration relating to the general ledger and research grants

  • Carry out financial management and reporting activities as required

It is vital that you possess excellent inter-personal skills to be able to work well with the team and manage good working relationships with a wide variety of people from all over the world, in order to gain an understanding of the needs of academics and research staff and deliver a responsive financial service to them.

Research assistant in the development of multi-species interactions

We are looking for an enthusiastic full-time Research Assistant to work with Dr Susie McLaren on the development of key species interactions in coral reef ecosystems, based in the Xiong group (www.xionglab.org) at the Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge.

The successful candidate will be involved in studies of symbiont-host cell interactions, morphogenesis and tissue mechanics during coral embryo development and symbiosis establishment with dinoflagellate algae. This research seeks to uncover novel mechanisms in the development of Cnidarian-Plankton symbiosis and the unexplored interplay between symbionts and corals during cnidarian morphogenesis with an aim to inform our understanding of fundamental biological processes and coral reef ecosystem recovery approaches. Using molecular, cellular, physical and theoretical approaches, the candidate will work closely with the PI and researchers in the lab to assist the completion of projects and upkeep of organisms. In addition to working on the development of key ecological interactions, the candidate will have the chance to work in an exciting interdisciplinary environment and engage with members of the host lab, which focuses on understanding the physical mechanisms of development using the chicken embryo as a model system. There will also be opportunities to receive training in a variety of techniques including imaging, computation, biophysics, cell and developmental biology and engineering approaches and will receive co-authorship credits on publications. Furthermore, the candidate will receive support if they wish to take on career development activities including appropriate professional courses while in the role. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to contribute to and develop their experience in research at the intersection of developmental biology and ecology with important implications for ecosystem conservation approaches.

It is essential that the candidate has excellent communication and teamwork skills. Experience and a good understanding of working in research labs are required. Prior lab technician experience is desirable.

Main duties include: Perform experimental and analysis work on different projects depending on project needs; Perform and develop methods for maintenance and handling of organisms (Cnidarians, algae, copepods); Master and maintain lab protocols and prepare common reagents; Coordinate with the PI; Provide technical guidance and training to new lab members; Participate in regular group meetings and other group activities.

Research Associate (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a 3-year Grade 7 Post-Doctoral Research Associate position to join an international team in the Department of Genetics in central Cambridge. The project is led by Dr Ben Steventon and is aimed towards understanding how alterations in tissue geometry and tissue extrinsic mechanical forces can alter early tissue morphogenesis during embryonic development. The project will be co-led by the Steventon group, and that of Dr Thierry Savin in the Department of Engineering. It would be well suited to someone from a Bioengineering or experimental Biophysics background who has an interest to apply their skills in the context of a mechanobiology project. There will be ample opportunity to learn from and become immersed in a research group that utilizes a range of biological systems to tackle fundamental problems of early embryo development.

We are looking for a highly motivated and well-organized person, with a PhD in Bioengineering, Biophysics or a related discipline, with experience in either microfluidic methods, hydrogels for 2D/3D cell culture, or micromechanics of biological tissues. Excellent organizational skills and the desire to work as part of an inter-disciplinary team is essential.

Research Associate- Mata Group (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a Biocurator to join PomBase, the model organism database for the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The project's aims are to manually curate and integrate molecular, genetic, biochemical and sequence data for fission yeast.

Applicants will have completed a PhD and have a background in biocuration and/or in yeast experimental biology, with a degree in Cell biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or a similar field. They should also have skills in data organization and basic bioinformatics and a passion for reading and interpreting original research. The applicant will need to have a broad understanding of eukaryotic cell biology. Experience in ontology use and/or editing would be an advantage.

Proteomics Technical Lead

We are looking to appoint a Proteomics Technical Lead to join the Proteomics Facility at the MRC Toxicology Unit, University of Cambridge. The facility performs a fundamental role in tackling proteomic-based problems for the Unit's scientific programmes.

As the Proteomics Technical Lead you will work on several projects in response to the needs of our researchers and actively participate in mass spectrometry/proteomics method development. You will be responsible for sample preparation, reporting results to scientists, operating and maintaining specialist equipment and general laboratory management.

You will ideally be skilled in a broad range of methods in proteomics and biological mass spectrometry and chromatography and have excellent communication skills to enable to you work on projects which are often transient and time critical. You will need to have a degree in a scientific discipline, preferably with a postgraduate qualification. You will also be an excellent communicator and team player, with the ability to manage a laboratory including health and safety, purchasing and equipment maintenance.

Research Laboratory Technician (Fixed Term)

The Department of Veterinary Medicine would like to appoint a highly motivated Research Laboratory Technician to provide technical support for research activity in order to ensure the smooth running of the Biomineral Research Facility. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a cutting-edge research environment while making a meaningful impact.

The Biomineral Research Group endeavours to unravel the intricate ways in which minerals influence both health and pathology, aiming to leverage this knowledge for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes, including through engineered mineral structures. Diseases of special interest to the Group are cancer and autoimmune/inflammatory disorders. Recent work focused on improving understanding of cell exposure to titanium dioxide (E171) in humans (Curr Opin Toxicol. 2020 Feb:19:112-120).

The successful candidate will have practical experience of laboratory research and strong organisational skills. ICP-MS analysis will be the major technique employed, but there will also be opportunities to work with collaborators in confocal microscopy and other analytical and imaging techniques.

This is a full time, fixed term position. The funds for this post are available until August 2025 in the first instance. Key responsibilities of the role will include:
