Review of HMS Pinafore

I thought it managed to be both satisfyingly traditional and sparklingly fresh - quite an achievement. Normally one is at the expense of the other. All the principals were strong - not a single weak link which is unusual in an amateur production. Patrick O'Brien has an exceptionally powerful stage presence and Liz Brinsdon would grace any professional company (as she does, for instance, in the St Martins in the Fields Chorus). Her smooth vocal warmth and control of upper register is very fine.

The chorus work was outstandingly slick - clarity of diction, intonation, differentiation of vocal parts and choreography. Congratulations both to chorus master and director. (And the smooth management of tempi showed how well the whole cast had been trained too).

It was a pity that the madrigal dragged down more than a groan-inducing semi-tone in both verses.

I thought the revival take on WSG's traditional encore routine (generally very out of fashion) after 'Never Mind the Whys and Wherefores' was a comic tour de force - such a good idea.

Hamming up the dialogue so that it becomes pantomimically camp worked well too. If you try to do it straight (and some productions do) it's excruciating!
