Research Positions in the Hollfelder Lab
Postdocs
Please send your CV, a statement of your research interests and have two reference letters sent (written by an academic mentors, who have worked with you in the laboratory or the classroom before).
Advertisements for specific available positions can be found at http://www.bioc.cam.ac.uk/jobs/index.html. But we welcome suitably qualified postdoc candidates at any time and can then work out a strategy for funding. For example, several postdocs have joined the lab funded by the EU (as Marie-Curie fellows: http://www.cordis.lu/mariecurie-actions/), the Swiss National Foundation, CNPq and other international and national sources that award individual fellowships.
PhD students
The doctoral students in the group have joined us from many different backgrounds and universities in the UK, Germany, Mexico, Thailand and the US. You should have studied Biochemistry, Biology or Chemistry.
See the Graduate prospectus for information on admission by the Board of Graduate Studies.
- Applicants from the UK: UK undergraduates can apply for departmental quota studentships (See admissions page)
- Applicants from the EU: EU undergraduates qualify for departmental quota studentships with fees only, i.e. you need a second sponsor to cover your maintenance (e.g. the Cambridge European Trust or other sources that can be found HERE. You do not, however, have to have this sponsor when you apply.
- Applicants from the rest of the world: The department has no resources to support your PhD work directly, so you need to be supported by a scholarship from your home country, the Gates Cambridge Trust or other sources that can be found here: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/funding/.
If you are interested in joining the group as a PhD student, please send your CV, a statement of your research interests and have two reference letters sent (written by an academic mentors, who have worked with you in the laboratory or the classroom before). Applications are possible at any time, but departmental quota studentships are distributed in January/February. See also admissions website.
Undergraduate Thesis Work
Students from other universities can carry out their undergraduate thesis work (e.g. German Diplomarbeit) in our research group. The student will obtain a degree from his or her home institution which usually requires finding an academic who is willing to take formal responsibility for the thesis.
Summer Students
Occasionally we can accommodate students (subject: chemistry or biochemistry), who spend at least eight weeks in a summer project. They would work under the guidance of an experienced doctoral or postdoctoral student in an ongoing project. Please be aware such stays need to be arranged well in advance, and contact us well in advance. Students must have basic training in experimental biochemistry or chemistry before coming - especially you should have done substantial laboratory work before coming here. Please send a CV and have a reference letter sent (written by an academic mentor, who has worked with you in the laboratory or the classroom before). Unfortunately funds to support such stays are only rarely available in Cambridge , so you need to apply for scholarship funding yourself.
PS. We never respond if your letter is obviously a mass mailing -- you have zero chance with this strategy.
