Use and Abuse: Pharmacology of Janus Drugs

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide an understanding of

  1. The dual role of drugs in society
  2. An understanding of the physiology and pharmacological treatment of pain
  3. The mechanisms underlying addiction to, and motivation for abuse of substances such as opioids and cannabinoids
  4. Neurophysical basis of addiction i.e. tolerance, sensitisation, dependence and withdrawal
  5. An understanding of the consequences of misuse of drugs that have therapeutic importance.

At the end of the course, each student should have

  • A detailed understanding of the mechanism and treatment of pain
  • A broad understanding of the physiological and psychological mechanisms underlying addiction
  • An understanding of why some drugs are abused.

Lectures, Practicals, Seminars, Discussion, visit to a hospice

Assessment Examiners

MODA MVST IB examiners
Assessors: Lecturers with consent
Examination format: Written: 1 essay (45 minutes) and 2 short answers (15 minutes each)

Timetabling

Lectures and seminars will be held in the lecture theatre in Pharmacology.

The practical class will be conducted in the Pharmacology MVST 1B teaching classroom.

The bus for the hospice visit will leave from Tennis Court Road (near entrance to the Downing site).

The teaching objective is to cover the following topics as 10 lectures, 3 seminars, 1 practical, and 1 organised visit.
