School of the Biological Sciences Guide to IT and Computing
Options for web sites
- Departments run their own web sites and you may be able to run your group
or personal web sites on the same server: consult your departmental IT staff
- You may also wish to use the Managed Web Service, which is one of
the services available to institutions and groups from the University Computing
Service (UCS). This requires you to have or obtain your own domain name. You can use
any design for the web site you like though you may wish to use the University
house-style templates, which you can vary within bounds.
- You can now also use the Falcon content management service, again
provided by UCS. This uses Plone. You use University house-style templates so
it is suitable for University initiatives but may not suit national or
international initiatives.
- Some people need scientific applications interfaces. These are run on
servers used for bioinformatics and computational biology. See
information on the right. Examples include BLAST interfaces to private
databases.
