School of the Biological Sciences Guide to IT and Computing
Options for email
- The main University email service is provided by the University Computing Service.
This allows access from any computer or suitable mobile phones, using any email
software, and has a webmail interface. It is known as Hermes. You manage
your hermes account (eg forwarding, vacation message etc) via the webmail
interface. It is free to end users.
- You can also run email lists using University Computing Service facilities.
- Your department may have its own email domain, often using the University
Computing Service managed mail domain service, and it may issue you with addresses
of the form a.b.smith@dept.cam.ac.uk or similar "friendly" names.
- If you have a University CRSid (eg abc20) you usually have an address of the form
crsid@cam.ac.uk
- You can define where email sent to your @cam.ac.uk address goes: visit the
Lookup web site.
You
need a Raven password first (See University Computing Service link on the right).
- You can choose to publish, or stop showing, your email address in the public
email directory search, using Jackdaw (where you
can also set your @cam address but Lookup offers more other
features).
