Your group or department may have a backup facility. This may include off-site storage of tapes. It is impossible to over-emphasize the importance of backups of data and work in progress (eg dissertations, books and papers) so it is advisable to decide how you will do this early on: consult your group or departmental IT staff.
It is important to note the difference between backups, for emergency recovery, and archives for long term storage.
For some archives you may be able to use the DSpace repository where you will find advice on research data management including what you need to do when making funding bids .
